But now George Washington has become the first president, he has been elected a second time and no monument has been erected. Congress discussed creating a sort of mausoleum on Capitol Hill, but the Washington family refused to move their remains from the family’s property on Mount Vernon. And only tens of years later, the National Monument Society to George Washington was created , which took the matter out of the paper.

The design contest was won by architectural engineer Robert Mills, who later built the Treasury, the Patent Office and the Washington Post Office. The monument’s original design included an obelisk surrounded at its base by a circular pantheon with Greek columns. The figure of Washington driving the carriage should decorate the entrance.
