Ouzoud Falls

The Ouzoud Falls are located in the High Atlas Mountains near the village of Tanagmeil in the Azilal region, 150 km north-east of Marrakech. Every day, crowds of tourists come here purely for the sake of the waterfalls. And yes, these are the most beautiful waterfalls in Morocco. Look at them – you won’t want to look at others 🙂 In Morocco, at least.

The name of the Ouzoud Falls is translated from Berber , as “the art of grinding grain”. On the one hand, the toponym is completely understandable: the waterfall rumbles, as if it really has no equal in grinding grain. On the other hand, they say that there are too many mills in the area , and the name was given first to the local region, and then at the same time to the waterfalls. Some of the mills can be seen by climbing to the very top of the cascade, from where the water rushes down. Mills, by the way, do not grind grain here, but olives to produce olive oil. And this is where the confusion begins.

Those who probably know Tamazight, the Berber language, should ask about the name of the Uzud waterfalls. Because one half of the sites and books says that “uzud” is a “mill”, and the other half says that it is an “olive tree”. Since there are even more olive trees in the district than mills, it is very difficult to find out what exactly the waterfalls were named after. We hope the Berbers themselves are not confused about this.

The height of the Ouzoud Falls is 110 meters in total – there are several steps, and it is customary to consider their total height. The river bed on the cliff is higher than at the bottom – as a result, several small streams are obtained that fall into a solid lake. Looks amazing. Under the lowest (and most picturesque) step, a small tourist ferry floats, capable of pulling all interested tourists almost under the stream itself. You do not want? Then shoot in the distance from the shore.

They say that at sunset the monkeys come out to the waterfall to drink water. They also say that lately more tourists who want to see the macaques come here at sunset than the macaques themselves. No wonder, because next to it there is a full tourist complex with infrastructure: campgrounds, bungalows, baths, restaurants with Berber cuisine and a bunch of stalls with local souvenirs.

In addition to the Ouzoud Falls, the region is home to the El Abid canyon up to 600 meters deep. And the river that creates the waterfall flows into the Ben-el-Ouidan reservoir just downstream , which you can also look at. In the local desert area, it looks very impressive. And what, you will get tired of looking at the waterfalls alone.
