Joshua Tree National Park is situated in Southeastern California on the territory of the Mojave and Colorado deserts, but not so far from Los Angeles. In Joshua Tree National Park there are many places to walk or climb on a rock. But since we are not climbers, and not even beginners, we did not have the appropriate equipment with us. Therefore, we walked along trails, on which two legs and a good mood are enough.

The territory of the park is quite large – 3,199.6 km 2 , all covered with granite rocks and located in two deserts at once – the high-mountainous Mojave and Colorado. And it is for the Mojave that the landscape of rocks and trees of Joshua is typical, while in the Cottonwood oasis in the Colorado desert at an altitude of less than 900 meters, ordinary yuccas grow, as well as choya (jumping choya) cacti, fokieria (or ocotijo) and Washington palms (they are also Californian palm trees).

Granite rocks

Joshua Tree National Park is also famous for its cliffs. Many climbers come here to learn how to rock climbing or hone their skills to climb the tops of bizarre rocks.

Granite giants rarely lie in a single layer. Due to temperature differences over millennia and erosion, cracks have formed between them, and therefore they look like it is a copy of the Peruvian fortress of Sacsayhuaman , which we saw in Cusco.

Interesting Facts:

  • Some of the cliffs at Joshua Tree National Park stand alone above the landscape. They are called inselberg, which is translated from German as mountains-islands.
  • The oldest rocks in Joshua Tree National Park are gneiss. It is believed that they remained from those distant times when shale rocks were formed here on the single continent of Rodinia. The same rocks can now be found only in Australia and Antarctica.
