Siargao Island – Philippines

Siargao Island

Siargao Island is located in the southeast of the Philippines, 800 km from the capital Manila. This is a very large island, its area is 416 square kilometers and its dimensions are 35 by 30 kilometers. For comparison, the famous island of Boracay is only 7 kilometers long and just over 500 meters. About 94,000 people live in Siargao.

Siargao is part of the province of Surigao do Norte (the group of islands in Mindanao), which, incidentally, is quite far from other popular resorts in the Philippines. There are eight villages and the same number of municipalities. The largest and most developed settlement is called General Luna (General Luna). There are no cities on the island, no big hotels, big chain stores and fast food restaurants. But there are many tropical forests (mangroves and palm trees) and a clean coastline with a rich underwater world.

Siargao Island

In general, the landscape of Siargao Island is markedly different from other Philippine islands. Nowhere else are there so many palm trees (coconut in the first place). They are literally everywhere here – they frame the coast beautifully and get thicker as you move inland.

Siargao Island – The huge Philippine trench in this place runs on a vertical reef barrier. Therefore, this island is regularly hit by strong waves, creating excellent conditions for surfers.

First of all, Siargao is one of the ideal places for surfing in the Philippines. Waves for beginners on the local coast are available all year round, and experienced surfers can make the most of their favorite outdoor activity from August to November. (more…)
