Angel Falls is part of the National Park Canaima, which is located in the state of Bolivar, Venezuela. Water flows from the summit of Mount Auyantepuy, one of the largest mesas. Even before the collision with the ground, from 300 m and above, the waters of Angel turn into billions of tiny particles that form a kind of fog. This wind-blown fog spreads over several kilometers. The mountain got the name ‘Devil’s Canyon’, apparently because of the enormous force with which the waters of Angel rush from almost a kilometer height.

The Angel Falls got its name in honor of the American pilot Jimmy Angel. This avid explorer noticed Auyantepui from a flight altitude in November 1933, and then returned to these parts in October 1937, trying to land his Flamingo plane on the top of the mountain. When landing, the landing gear sank into swampy soil, the plane went out of order, and then Angel, along with his group of three, went on foot with Auyantepui. This journey from wilderness to civilization lasted eleven days. The news of Angel’s adventures and misadventures spread quickly, after which the waterfall was named Angel Falls.

However, there are several ways in which you can see Angel. There is an option to go hiking in the isolated jungle, but it is better to rent a private jet or helicopter. In the latter case, an impressive natural creation opens up from all sides, in all its glory, however, when traveling by air, there is no guarantee that the sky will be favorable to tourists, all the time remaining cloudless.

In 2009, Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez announced that he would rename Angel Falls to Kerepacupai Meru. At first, the Churun-merú option was considered, but the president’s daughter remembered that there is already a waterfall with that name in this area, and this waterfall is very small. Then Chavez settled on the Kerepakupai-meru variation. This step was motivated by the fact that the Angel Falls should not bear the name of the American Jimmy Angel, since long before its appearance the waterfall belonged to the Republic of Venezuela and was its wealth.
